New York Philharmonic Concert on Governors Island

New York City’s premier orchestra will play at 6:30 PM on July 5th
Concert is free and open to the public, caps day of programs on the Island
Free ferries will run continuously to transport concertgoers to and from the Island



The New York Philharmonic will play a concert on Governors Island’s historic Parade Grounds at 6:30 PM on Saturday, July 5th. The concert and the ferry ride to Governors Island are free and open to the public. The event and ferry do not require tickets.

Below is information all visitors need to know prior to coming to the Governors Island concert. More information can be found at www.govisland.com  or www.nyphil.org.

Ferries to Governors Island

Governors Island opens at 10 AM on Saturday, July 5th. Ferries will run every half hour between 10 AM and 3:30 PM. Ferries leave from the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan, located at the corner of South and Whitehall Streets.

Between 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM, ferries will run every 15 minutes between Manhattan and Governors Island. Visitors are welcome to come any time throughout the day to access the Island in advance of the concert.

Ferries will be leaving from Slip 6 and Slip 7 in the Battery Maritime Building.

Public parking is available in a garage across from the ferry terminal.

Pedestrians can most easily access the Battery Maritime Building via Old Slip.

Concert Site

The concert will take place on the Island’s Parade Grounds, located a short 5 minute walk from the ferry dock. Seating will be picnic style, and visitors are welcome to bring blankets and chairs.

Food and Drink

Visitors are also invited to bring their own food; however, food vendors will also be available. Grilling, cooking, and alcohol are prohibited on Governors Island.

Amenities

Vendors will be selling food, water and beverages on the Island throughout the day and at the concert.

Port-a-sans are also available for visitor use and will be placed around the Parade Grounds.

Accessibility

The Governors Island ferry and the concert site are accessible by wheelchair.

Bikes on the Island

Bikes are permitted on Governors Island on July 5th. However, bikes will NOT be allowed to board the Governors Island ferry after 3:30 PM. Bikes already on the Island at that time will be permitted to remain on the Island. Bike rental will be available until 5 PM.

In addition to the Philharmonic concert, there are a wide variety of activities and for the public to enjoy. Below is a list of other programs happening on Governors Island on July 5th.

Folks on the Island Presents Janis Ian, 1:30 PM

A veteran folk-pop singer/songwriter, Janice Ian’s music features satiric wit, edgy humor, and 1960s inspired passion. In her 40-year history, this Grammy award-winning performer’s music continues to reflect and transcend the challenges of our times.

Exhibits

“In Site” -- The Sculptors Guild is honored to present this exhibition marking a 70 year celebration for the Guild, in its city of origin.

“Emergence” by Figment -- an interactive, three-dimensional living exhibit, featuring contributions from more than 30 artists/art collectives working in a diverse range of media, including sculpture, installation art, photography, and more.

“Painting Governors Island” -- eight painters exhibit their watercolors and oil paintings made on- site, on Governors Island.

“Governors Island” – a collection of photographs by Lisa Kereski and Andrew Moore.
National Park Service Tours

The National Park Service leads walking tours of the National Historic District every hour at 25 minutes past the hour. Tours leave from Fort Jay.

Visitors are also invited to bike around the Historic District, take a tram tour, or bring a picnic and enjoy the Island’s green open spaces.

The following is the concert program for the Philharmonic’s July 5th concert on Governors Island.

Tchaikovsky, Capriccio espagnol, 1812 Overture

The concert will last approximately one and a half hours.

Returning from Governors Island

The concert is scheduled to end at 8 PM. Ferry service will run continually from Governors Island beginning at 7 PM. Ferries will run every 15 minutes from Governors Island back to Manhattan. Ferries will return to the Battery Maritime Building and Pier 11, which is about 300 yards north of the Battery Maritime Building.

From 3:30 until 6:30, ferries will run from the Battery Maritime Building to Governors Island every 15 minutes. Beginning at 7 PM, ferries will run every 15 minutes off Governors Island back to Manhattan. Ferries returning to Governors Island will drop visitors at the Battery Maritime Building and Pier 11, located 300 yards north of the Battery Maritime Building.
